Hearthstone Twist Season 1 format

The official season of this Hearthstone game mode starts on Sept. 1 with the Wonders format. This gives players a blast from the past as it pays tribute to the early years of the game. According to Blizzard, the Twist Wonders format includes every expansion from Legacy Hearthstone through the Mean Streets of Gadgetzan expansion. The new cards from the upcoming Caverns of Time set are in this as well.

Here is the list of viable Hearthstone Twist Season 1 sets:

  • Legacy (Not Core or Classic)
  • Curse of Naxxramas
  • Goblins vs Gnomes
  • Blackrock Mountain
  • The Grand Tournament
  • The League of Explorers
  • Whispers of the Old Gods
  • One Night in Karazhan
  • Mean Streets of Gadgetzan
  • Caverns of Time

Season 1 of Hearthstone Twist does not include the Demon Hunter and Death Knight. This is because these classes didn't exist back then.

Hearthstone Twist beta playtest

Back in June, we chatted with the Hearthstone team about the Twist game mode. Matt London and Chadd Nervig shared details of the New Age beta format. New Age involved the Core Set plus all sets from Ashes of Outland to Festival of Legends. New Age also banned the use of Neutral cards.

London also shared the Hearthstone team's philosophy going into Hearthstone Twist, its design, and its future.

“We're going to test it a few different ways, I think," London said, referring to the seasons that have a twist in terms of the rules. "And we'll see what players are most engaged with. The plan in the early days is to rotate on a monthly schedule so that the seasons of Twist actually coincide with ranked seasons and our other constructed formats.”

London told esports.gg that there are different components involved in designing Twist seasons as well.

“One is, what's the card pool that we want players to engage with? And then the other is what kinds of rule variants can we experiment with to create a kind of constructed gameplay that is distinct in some way from Standard or from Wild?”

That's all for now. Stay tuned on esports.gg for more news and updates. See you next time in the Tavern!
